L'ellegance du herisson by Muriel Barbery
Dear friends,
I am back in 2021 willing to write a bit of my impressions about all the books i'm reading in this year. I'll tell you here on my blog and my instagram if I recommend the book or not and why and some of my thoughts about it.
Oh, well! My first connection with this marvellous book hapenned few years ago when the first time I accidentally found it at Edinburgh Library. I've read it in original and that was an amazing pleasure. I haven't reread it because I think there I are so many very good books in the whole world that I barely decide to give a second chance to the same book. But, it hapenned that in 2020, because of the pandemic, my walks to the library were forbidden, so, my reading thirst of some good books grew. And for this Christmas we got this book in Russian (my second language), and I was extremely happy to read this book again. More than this, I wanted to read something in Russian and voila, I got this book. That made me happy and I started the year with it.
If I recommend this book? Oh, yeah! I highly recommend it. This is the kind of book that provoques lots of insights in your head and make you reflect upon many things and situations in this life and that is so important.
The story is happenening in Paris among 2 protagonists: a 54 years old consierge and an early teenage girl of 12 years old. Cats are very present on the whole novel and there is a deep connection with the Japanese culture indeed, and by the second part of the book, the 3rd protagonist a Japanese man is appearing. The Japanese culture so present in this book is not accidental, if we discover a bit the author's life. She used to live long time in Japan, and probably she is still living in this amazing country.
Another moment I would like to mention about this book is that it enrich the reader's intellectual knoledge with many art details in music, movies, painting, books etc.
The end of "The helegance du herisson" is very unexpected, and made me very emotional, but i'll stop my phrase here, and let you discover by yourself what happened.
Entirily and by details, it's been a great pleasure to read this book. This made me want to read all Muriel Barbery's books. I adore her writing. Hopefully I'll find her books in French <3
Bonne lecture a vous, mes ami(e)s!
PS: by the PS i'll always mention "la cerise sur le gateau" of every book I've read. So here, in my humble opinion this detail would be the way Madame Michelle / Rene (same character) was trying to communicate with the people in the building in such a way, so nobody understand that she is a true intellectual person, so all could think she was a simpleton and ignorant and of very low dough of the society, as a consierge must be in their opinion.
